In July 2013, Monsanto’s Chairman for Europe, Jose Manuel Madero, announced the discontinuation of the genetically modified seed (also known as transgenic) business in the region. In this way, the world largest producer of transgenic seeds would only maintain its conventional businesses of seeds and crop protection. Nevertheless, transgenic crops were growing relentlessly in many other areas of the world. To what extent was this technology one of the essential tools to solve food problems in the world? How would its rejection impact farmers and consumers in countries where transgenic crops were not authorized? And consumers?
